In the afternoon, FDA2 are presenting their packaging module work for final marking to both Richard and Gary. This will be in the main studio - and FDA1 are invited to watch them present ( just as we did last year )

The H.E. common room is timetabled for you on Wednesday after 10.15am

Thursday and Friday - FDA1 are with Tim in the Studio - marking all their work at 3pm. I will also be in on on Friday for the marking.

Both years will be given paperwork regarding Professional Practice - you must make sure it's understood.

A quick note for FDA2. I just spoke to a mate who teaches at St Martins (who has also taught at SCCH), he had posted 'with 30 students who have not slept all night" - I asked what he meant and he said 'It's Crit day" - I told him that my students don't that - he replied "but these kids are hungry"

I have been assured by Martin that a suite of laptops has been transferred to the Graphic Com. department from the Library - and that IT are now cleaning them and adding creative suite. These are for Graphic Com use only - along with the five 15' macbook pro's. Also, we have ordered Laptop chargers on the Art Department budget.

RE: Mid Pint Crit. This half term is dedicated to the packaging module - so that's the emphasis and what I am marking - the YCN & D&AD work is the 2/3D design module that is timetabled for the 2nd part of this term - and I need to confine the marking schedule to the module timetable - so, to confirm, Packaging only for mid-point marking.

Ideas Fund Innovators - New Round Open to Applications

A new deadline has been announced for the Ideas Fund Innovators scheme, sponsored by IdeasTap.

Each application round (there are four per year) offers ten awards of £1,000 to young people within the UK between the ages of 16 and 25, who have a creative project in any artistic discipline that they want to get off the ground. In the past, dance and film projects, music videos and photography collectives have been supported.

The Fund will consider applications from groups or individuals within the UK for inspiring, original, realistic and innovative arts and creative projects, providing one person takes the lead and has the main responsibility for managing the application and any money awarded.
Applications must demonstrate that the Fund will enhance the quality and ambition of their ideas and projects in ways that would not be possible without the support of the Fund. Applicants must also be able to show that the project has not been done before. Applicants must be aged between 16 and 25 on 22 March 2012 and be resident in the UK.
The next deadline for applications is 22 March 2012.

Terry has to work commercially today, so Richard is filling in - you are working on the packaging module, YCN and D&AD briefs. I have a new copy of last years YCN winners and commended entries, very useful - looking at it last week, it's clear that the concepts were nothing better than anything I've seen at SCCH - but the finish was good - clear, concise and well presented.

In addition, it's also possible that some of you may be called up to interview at any time now - so start thinking about how to present your work. I still need to do a 1-2-1 tutorial with Dean, Charlotte and Chris.

It's also important that you tell me where you have applied and when you are called to interview - I have supplied all UCASS references, but I would like to brief you all first.

Tuesday - Terry lewis will be with you all day

Wednesday - FDA1, 10am start with Gary Neill, the start of Critical and cultural studies. In the afternoon, you will be back to The planets project, with gary.

Thursday and Friday, with Karen Wilks in the studio - 10am start. New project, magazine design.

New logo treatment for the Royal College of Art - 175th anniversary

"Brody, who is dean of the RCA’s School of Communication, has created the logo to be used throughout the year.The RCA was founded in 1837 as the Government School of Design. It started out with just 12 students, based in a wing of Somerset House. The RCA now has an enrollment of more than 1100 students from 58 countries."

I don't mind this - I like the use of space and the way that the old and new are combined together.

Interesting article that you should all read here about the de-brand of Waterstones. I think it's a well written rational - up to the point where they refer to the apostrophe, I would have preferred it if they just told the truth - it does not work as a URL. Personally - I find it objectionable that the last major bookseller chooses to disregard basic grammatical rules - and even more offensive that it's assumed the public are so stupid that they don't care.

Getting the Book Invented Properly...

The Literary Platform is hosting an international competition inviting creatives to produce an animation that illustrates a rare and prophetic audio recording of Douglas Adams talking in 1993 about the Evolution of the Book.

In 1993 Douglas Adams, the world-renowned author of The Hitchhikers Guide of the Galaxy, recorded a short piece of audio for his US publisher of the time – Bob Stein of Voyager Expanded Books. Who would know how prophetic his words would sound nearly twenty years later, and how accurate his sense of the evolution of the book was.

In this short recording, kindly donated to The Literary Platform by Bob Stein, Douglas Adams charts the evolution of the book from the ‘hardware problems’ of writing on rocks, to scrolls, to the bound book and finally the silicon chip.

Entries will be judged by Stephen Fry, Bob Stein (SocialBook, Inc), Ranjit Dhaliwal (The Guardian) and Merlin Nation and Chris Angelkov (Atyp).

It's important that you remember the UCAS deadline for top-up applications for MOST courses is January 15th ( Some are later - and at SCCH we also sometimes accept late applicants )

If you are applying to Top Up, you will need a reference from me that I add to your application on Jan 15th ( It's done via UCAS, you don't get to see the reference ).

If you are making an application, you must let me know beforehand, and tell me where you are applying to, different colleges favour different types of reference. Also, if you are making an application to entry into the 3rd year - make 100% sure that there are places available - and that you have the required qualifications - it's not always straight forward.

Some top-up courses have an 'accord' agreement with the UoB which means you are guaranteed an interview ( but not a place ) - this will be indicated on the application, Alison Smith can help you if you don't understand this part.

Czech Design – Independent, Free and Democratic? The Pelcl Symposium

One-day symposium: 20 January 2012
The Sallis Benney Theatre, University of Brighton, Grand Parade
The British premiere of much of Jirí Pelcl’s recent work in the University of Brighton Gallery provides an opportunity to study his work at first hand as well as the platform for a one-day symposium. Drawing on original contributions from design professionals, design critics, theorists and historians from the Czech Republic and the UK, the symposium will consider the ways in which Czech design horizons have changed since the mid 1980s when the ideologies of the Eastern Bloc began to undergo change and challenge. The emergence of a new democratic state has not been without its problems for design.

Speakers will include: Jirí Pelcl (AAAD, Prague), Sylva Petrova (Director of the Institute for International Research in Glass, University of Sunderland), David Crowley (Royal College of Art, London), Jyri Kermik (University of Brighton), Dagmar Koudelkova (AAAD, Prague), Martina Pachmanova (AAAD, Prague), Iva Knobloch (UPM, Prague) and Professor Jonathan Woodham.

The symposium fee is £50 (including lunch and refreshments), although we are delighted to offer the concessionary rate of £25 to University of Brighton alumni and £18 to retired or unemployed University of Brighton alumni.

Manager and Martin Symons - Head of School - and myself, we just want to assure you that the course will be 100% fine and continuity will remain when you change over to a new Subject Leader - which is probably going to be at the start of April ( they have to give notice at their current post ) - I also want to assure you that although I'm not the SL, I'll still be teaching you and acting in many ways as Locum, so the course will be essentially... exactly the same. You won't see quite as much of me - but I'm sure that some of you will be quite pleased about that...

FDA1 - start Wednesday January 11th - with a briefing in the morning - the start of your Typography and Letterforms module. This is a complex and multi project module - so be prepared to concentrate. You will also be getting written marks and feedback, and are expected to fill in your own feedback paperworks and return to me. You will probably be in the H.E. common room on this morning - but check the blog regularly.

On the Thursday and Friday - you will all be given a tutorial, and work starts on this module.

In addition, I require ALL the FDA2 typographic manifesto prints to be returned to me on the first day back - they are going to be exhibited.

If you want your marks sent through to you before Xmas - you must email me, but they will all be gone through with you in detail on a 1-2-1 basis during the first week back.

As explained, the FDA email address will 'expire' on Jan 1st - but I'll be keeping the blog going until the new SL takes it over. We have been in discussion at School Board level about social media and are very keen for this to develop, that includes facebook and Twitter ( which I hate - so if anyone else want's to have a go... )

Timetable - week starting December 12th

Myles Calvert is in the print room on Monday and Tuesday as a resource for both years - FDA1 and 2 both have projects that involve print - make sure you use this time well and don't leave it all to the last moment.

On Wednesday 4th - FDA1 - in the H.E. common room at 10am with your Warhol prints and Film Posters - marking for this module will take all morning - it's very important that you are on time!! We should be finished by 12.30pm

FDA2 are in the main studio with Gary all morning, you hand in your essay at 10am as instructed, no late comers! I was a bit disappointed that only 4 people used Hannah this week as instructed - and 2 of you hadn't even started. The money to pay her comes from your fees - so if you didn't use her - it was wasted.

In the afternoon - FDA2 are presenting their Books design and manifesto work - in the main studio - to both myself and Karen for module marking. You have all been briefed, and know exactly how to present your work. We start at 2pm, this is a formal module mark and goes towards your FDA grade.

I understand that Olga has been canvasing for a film to watch afterwards - you are welcome to use the studio, have drinks and food ( but be very discrete, please!!!)

Thursday and Friday - FDA1 are with John Reynolds - marking for this module will be Friday - essential that you do your best here!.

I am only timetables on Wednesday, and am working in Brighton for the rest of the week - but I will try to come in on Monday afternoon (edit - I'll do my best - it really depends on what time I can get out of work - email me directly if you have any problems - sooner rather than later ) - also Friday afternoon ( later on ) and I have a school board meeting on Thursday so I'll be around from 3pm.

This is an interesting brief. It's very current - but very difficult. When I was a student there weekly high profile competitions for HIV and Aids awareness campaigns, all the winners were dire, cliche driven bores ( sad faces, hearts, tears, rainbows countless derivations of red ribbons etc ) - sometimes it's easier to look at things from the outside ( remember the talk I gave you with very 'wrong' logo solutions by design agencies that specilise in church work? )

"Enter our competition to design a logo for our campaign to tackle homophobia and transphobia in sport.

We are asking budding designers to create an emblem for the Sports charter campaign that helps spread the message that hate of any kind in sport is not acceptable. Sports clubs, fans and players across the country will then use this logo to show they back the campaign.

The competition is targeted at young people but is open to anyone with creative flair.

The competition closes on Wednesday 18 January 2012 at 5pm. Rugby Union star, Ben Cohen will shortlist the top entries, which will then be put on our Facebook page for a public vote."

Don't know if you can help but I've been doing some freelance work for a company called apl in Hooe. They basically buy spreads in national press (jamie magazine the telegraph) and sell patches to companies (like ubisoft benecol etc). They are desperately looking for a full time designer to layout their spreads. They need someone creative but also someone who is capable of handling the software.

So I was wondering if you could recommend anyone or new of anyone? They would need to be able to drive and if they had photographic skills it would also be a bonus.

FDA2 - Academic Reading Week.

You are free to work at home or in college - this is your week to compete your first essay which MUST be handed in on December 14th - I've gone over the details here about 20 times, and you all know what to do. You are welcome to work in college - but you have no timetabled teaching, if you need to see Hannah - she is booked in on December 6th - just for you.

FDA1 - Communicating With Images - Wednesday December 7th

You have Myles Calvert today - you also have full access to the studio and screen printing - he's really happy with the progress and tells me there is some very good work. Well done.

FDA1 - Narrative Photography - week 1.

You have John Reynolds on Thursday and Friday - December 8th and 9th - in the studio. Bring notebooks - it's an important project that includes theory, research and practical photography - part 2 is next week.

Week 2 - starting December 12th

College will be much quieter, as F.E. teaching has ended.

FDA2 - December 12th and 13th ( Monday / Tuesday )

Myles Calvert is booked in to run the print room for you - most of you will need to complete your Manifesto work here, and your book covers. I'm also trying to tie down Andrew Robey to talk to you about Top Up - but it's a tight fit. If he cannot talk to you on Monday or Tuesday - it will be straight after Xmas.

Wednesday December 14th - morning.

FDA2 start at 9am - and finish at 12 noon - Hand in your Essay to Gary Neill as directed. He is only available in the morning. He Must take your completed essay away with him - if it's not handed in, it's classed as fail / referral - no excuses.

FDA2 - 2pm - presentation of COMPLETED Design for Print Module in the studio - both projects, Books and manifesto. We shall be joined by Karen Wilks who has been kind enough to agree to co-mark the work with me. No latecomers, no excuses - you must be ready to present exactly as directed - well mounted and well described work - foam board preferred, white backgrounds, no laser copies..

FDA1 - 10am Wednesday December 14th - in the H.E. common room - presentation of your Warhol Poster and Film Titles - this work will be marked fully on this day, no late comers etc.

FDA1 - Thursday / Friday December 15/16th - part 2 of the Narrative Photography project with John Reynolds in the studio.

At the end of this term you will have achieved the following -

FDA2 - Monday and Tuesday, you have 2 days with Karen Wilks, refining your book covers and co pelting the typographic elements. karen is an expert here - and you were advised to be ready to take advantage of tis set period to get your work up to scratch. I shall be in early on Monday to brief Karen on everyone's individual progress.

On Wednesday, there will be a national day of industrial action by a number of unions. I have moved Gary out of the FDA2 timetable and shall add him back in after xmas when you need him most, which is why you were briefed last week on your essays. Myles Calvert is not a union member and will me manning the print studios for FDA1 as timetabled and any FDA2 students who wish to take advantage of this time.

I can't really predict how the day will develop - but the college will be open, you are all encouraged to use the studio and facilities and there will be nothing to stop you from working.

Thursday FDA1 are with Terry Lewis for the 2nd time, and Friday they are with Myles Calvert ( FDA2 - you may use this time too )

I was in early this morning and it had been left in a terrible mess, rubbish everywhere - including food and drink, all the tables dirty and chairs all over the place.

It's not my job to come in and clean up after you - which I seem to have to do every day.

I doubt that the next Subject Leader will fight as hard as I have to keep this space - other departments have already started saying how much they like this studio - if you want to keep it - look after it, and that includes watering the plans ( most of which I paid for )

There will be NO food and drink in the studio until further notice.

This is the original version of the french comic book character, I've given you a link to the Wiki page below - you must spend some time before the film looking through all the cultural references and viewing it as part of popular culture that's connected to so many other things in the media, and how the film effected the lives and careers of the actors, I didn't know that jane Fonda turned down 'Bonnie and Clyde' to do this - which is a relief - because it went on to be one of the most important and influential American films of the 1960's without her. There is a big difference between watching a film for entertainment - and decoding it, looking for what you can lear and use. The FDA1 brief is all about decoding and re-imagining. It's not an accident that the film list was grouped into genres ( Modesty Blaise, Fantastic Voyage, Barbarella) - so you should be able to tackle a group of films.

Week Starting November 21st

Monday and Tuesday - FDA2 are in the studio with me - and you are presenting your research on Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday - FDA2 are with Gary Neil in the studio - because of industrial action next week - you will be briefed on your essays - you MUST be in on time.

FDA1 are printing all day with Myles. Make sure you are in early enough to get ready before Gary starts teaching in the studio.

If I can pick up a copy on Monday - the film will be Barbarella - it's one of the films that FDA1 have been told to study for their film titles brief ( Terry thought the research was... a bit thin)

Thursday and Friday - FDA1 are with Peter Quinnell - working on film titles and the Warhol Brief - and on Friday, Hannah Rollings will be with you too - helping you to work with the artwork artwork for the portrait prints.

The Ofstead inspection of the FE part of the college starts today. Inspectors will wear a red sash - this should not effect you but they have access to all areas - so remember what I said, no coffee cups or food in the studio.
