Excellent Episode tonight on Illustrated books - concentrating on the Victorian Era, technological advances and books such as Alice in Wonderland and the works of Mervyn Peake - really worth watching. Catch up here.
Thanks for this - a very good episode indeed! (and the next one on paperback designs sounds promising, too) Tenniel's work is beyond perfection. It's funny: I only saw his illustrations for Alice In Wonderland for the first time about 6 years ago (the copy of Alice I had as a child was illustrated by somebody else), and yet it feels like I grew up with Tenniel's images. Oh, and the lying Gryphon is my new desktop wallpaper.
I had a copy as a child - and it was the way the words would weave around the images that made me see typography as interesting - much more than the images.
