Giles Duley
I posted an interview with Hastings based photographer Giles Duley earlier in the week - I have an invitation to the PV of to his latest show if anyone wants to go ( It's Thursday evening - in London ) but the show runs on a bit from then - information below.
I'd be happy for you to read up on Giles and his work - and how he's coping with his disabilities now - whilst still retaining the motivation and passion for his craft - and perhaps understand why I get annoyed when some of you come up with feeble excuses for not doing your homework...
GILES DULEY, BECOMING THE STORY
Private View: Thursday 3 November 7 – 9pm
Exhibition Runs: 4 – 26 November
On 7th of February 2011, while on patrol in Afghanistan with 75th Cavalry, US Army, British documentary photographer Giles Duley stepped on an IED, instantly losing three of his limbs. After nine months of intensive rehabilitation Duley is now preparing to go back to work and back to Afghanistan. The first step is a retrospective of his work at the KK Outlet Gallery which we would like to invite you to.
Duley worked as a music and fashion photographer, his images have been featured in The New Statesman GQ, Vogue and Esquire. Ten years ago he became a humanitarian photographer, travelling to war torn areas such as The Congo, Angola and Sudan amongst others. He photographed the people he met there who were victims of circumstance, but never victims in spirit.
Becoming The Story showcases Duley first and foremost as an exceptional photographer and highlights the issues he was trying to draw our attention to.
The exhibition will also feature images taken by Canadian photographer David Bowering moments after the explosion in Afghanistan. Until recently some of these images haven't been shown in the public domain, however Giles now sees them as an important part of the anti – war story and believes others should too.

Edward Burra

The first major exhibition for over 25 years of the work of Edward Burra (1905-1976). I'm really pleased that the department facebook page is working well - I'm not getting involved with it - and it does take the pressure off me a bit - it's important that you all participate. I've had a couple of facebook requests myself in the last couple of weeks - the truth is, we have been directed not to have social network contacts with students when we are still teaching you - it's part of the college safeguarding policy, so don't be offended if I decline, and besides - my personal live is very dull...
We Love Hastings
I've added a click through to the We Love Hastings website - it's always been really difficult to figure out what's happening in Hastings - this is the first time I've seen anything get it right - so please use it.
Stuart Griffiths
I went to the PV and talk last night ( only one of you turned up ) by the photographer Stuart Griffiths, it was very interestng - in particular - the first part where he talked with the publisher of his book about how they went through the design process and developed a clever way of combining text with powerfull images - starting by editing the trxt - then realising it was still too wordy, and then using the device of 'redacting' that you hear somuch about to create a typographic techniqur - and developing a new font to suit.
Really good stuff and powerful images. The book designers had also come over and would have been happy to talk to anyone.
There are loads of things like this in the general area all through the year and you really need to take advantage of them, even if the weather was as bad as last night.

'Inspirational Images'
Great blog here that is heavy on good quality 1980's design and art direction - if you think about it, you are probably going to be interviewed and employed by art directors and designers who went to collerge during this period - so having a working familiarity of the period will really help.

This project is almost identical to one that FDA2 had last year - and FDA1 will have a similar brief themselves - it's to brand lakes rather than shipping areas - but essentially the same. Some really great results.

I really like this New York company and they way they integrate typography and product - they have very clear retro/modern handwriting and understand their creative space very well - products like this are simple to produce but very difficult to get right - worth keeping a few things for inspiration.

Bikes etc
I've been asked to tell you that you cannot use the station bicycle parking - and must keep to the sheds - not sure if this applies to anyone, but just passing it on.
Making information clear
Some of FDA2 are really struggling to make information simple, and communicating very basic facts - I think that you arew all getting trapped in the look of trying to come up with clever solutions and making things look nice, when really all you need to do is simplify what you ar trying to achive and ask the right questions - and read te brief!
This great piece of work from Melissa Price makes the UK monarchy really easy to understand - and communicates huge amounts of information and places it into context - without compromise and trying to be decorative or flashy. Design is problem solving and communication - not window dressing.

Warning from the police
Apparently there have been several students target by a scam by a company called 'Mystery Shopper UK' offering jobs to Hastings and UoB students work - the Hastings police have issued us with a warning, if you are unsure of anything or see advertising that looks 'wrong' or too good to be true - can you let us know please.

We would encourage your college to take part in this exciting competition which will be judged by our Secretary of State, Vince Cable.
The winner will be invited to spend a tailor-made day with the media and press team here at BIS or with one of BIS partners .
We need your entries in by Friday 18 November. Please send them to digital@bis.gsi.gov.uk .

Bonfire Night
This Saturday is Hastings Bonfire procession - it stats at 7pm at the West Hill Beacon and the procession goes up All Saints Street from about 7.15pm. If you are new to Hastings, it's quite an experience - although personally I usually leave before about 9pm when it gets too packed and rowdy. If you have a car - don't try parking in Central Hastings - many roads are closed. The full timetable is here.

New British Gas logo
I don't mind the shape of the flame - but the typo is very weak and will date by the end of the year - and the colours are rubbish, dropping in a bit of green is patronising and lazy. The story and discussion that comes with it is very interesting and effects you all.
Midnight Cowboy
There is a very good discussion and synopsis of the film here that looks at the main themes and explains anything you may have missed, the fast editing ( which won an Oscar and was very innovative for the time ) may have confused you if you have not seen the film before, so have a read through and think about what you understood. Try and relate the visuals to things that you are already familiar with - other films and trends that were influenced by the movie.
It was a very grim film, but full of jokes - "I'm one hell of a gorgeous chick, I'm 28 years old" being my favourite, and the Director was also very sly and liked messing with our heads - before the film came out there was quite a buzz about the content and the sexual themes - obviously Joe Buck wasn't actually gay - but the very first scene is him 'dropping the soap in the shower' - that was Schlesinger playing a trick on the less sophisticated 1970's audience and leading them up the garden path - unsettling them.
The main think I got from the film was about identity - all the way through - Joe tries to be something he is not - he idolises John Wayne and the first thing he does in New York is put up a poster of Paul Newman - but nobody takes him seriously, at the end - when he dumps the boots and hat and just wears ordinary clothes - he looks and feels better - and the first thing that happens is a pretty girl notices him and is friendly. Identity is the currency of design - I keep telling you all to be honest and to understand what a product is before you try to give it an identity - the closer to the truth of something you get - the better the result will be.
I'm happy to take suggestions for film club, and I want to cover as many genre types as possible that influence design and popular culture - so far I'm looking at Blade Runner, Clockwork Orange and a selection of New Wave, Gothic, Camp, Noir and Comedy - if there is something you would like to see - let me know.
FDA2 Sara has put up a facebook page for the course - this is a pretty good idea, apart from the social side and ease of communication - the design magazines and many agencies and dozens of other really great resources post daily - it means I don't have to put it all on the blog and you get up the minute updates on what's going on in design. many creative blogs also update by facebook - and fashion houses.

Icons
Andy Warhol was obsessed with Icons.
You will notice that I spent 20 mins putting up a new graphic on the studio window today. If you were paying attention - this image was hidden away in the exhibition at the De La Warr.
I am going to set the brief that every student - both years, must put a graphic of someone they consider to be an ICON - and leave it there for a week, starting straight after half term.
Put your thinking caps on.

Something to look forward to
This chap came in today for a meeting, they primarily develop music for film, television and advertising - and are very successful, Benbo is a side project - they are interested in putting together a project with us that's music/graphics based, so be on your best behaviour!!!
This came in from Brighton - I know that you might think it's out of your remit - but I don't see why you can't have a go - don't try and give them something that is 'expected' - take a risk and do something new and inventive - we have the facilities here to make up anything - so take a few risks.
STUDENT TROPHY COMPETITION
£500 PRIZE
The Golf Club, Royal Ashdown Forest, home of AA Milne and pooh sticks, wish to commission a new trophy called the Buckhurst Cup after Lord De La Warre who is a local landowner.
The trophy is to be a statue in the form of a deer or stag, which inhabit the forest. It needs to be modern but recognizable. Approximate size 10” high.
The competition is open to all students within the Faculty of the Arts.
Initial drawings and/or maquettes are to be submitted to Tina Fogarty in room G64, Grand Parade by Monday 31st October. The winning candidate would then have either
• until early December to produce a model to be moulded and cast
£500 Commissioning Prize
• or until mid January 2012 to produce a final piece with an additional fee of up to £500 for materials.
As RAFGC is one of the top 100 Golf Courses in the UK and is situated in Sussex, the Club are keen to work with students from the University of Brighton.
The trophy will be presented at the Club's AGM and Annual Prize Giving to the First Winner by Lord De La Warre. The winning student would be invited to attend the event in honor for their work.

STUDENT TROPHY COMPETITION
£500 PRIZE
The Golf Club, Royal Ashdown Forest, home of AA Milne and pooh sticks, wish to commission a new trophy called the Buckhurst Cup after Lord De La Warre who is a local landowner.
The trophy is to be a statue in the form of a deer or stag, which inhabit the forest. It needs to be modern but recognizable. Approximate size 10” high.
The competition is open to all students within the Faculty of the Arts.
Initial drawings and/or maquettes are to be submitted to Tina Fogarty in room G64, Grand Parade by Monday 31st October. The winning candidate would then have either
• until early December to produce a model to be moulded and cast
£500 Commissioning Prize
• or until mid January 2012 to produce a final piece with an additional fee of up to £500 for materials.
As RAFGC is one of the top 100 Golf Courses in the UK and is situated in Sussex, the Club are keen to work with students from the University of Brighton.
The trophy will be presented at the Club's AGM and Annual Prize Giving to the First Winner by Lord De La Warre. The winning student would be invited to attend the event in honor for their work.

It's very rare for a national newspaper to go through a re-design, so there has been a lot of attention and scrutiny here - I'm not so sure I like it, myself - I think it's too brash - any thoughts?

This is a nice piece of work - it reminds me a bit of something that Liv did, it's just a simple screen printed booklet - but it's crisp and well presented - and very elegant.

FDA2 are with me in the studio - Stamp Project / 2D/3d Module. I also need you to bring your fanzines, and I will talk to each of you 1-2-1 about the work.
On Tuesday at 3pm you will be expected to present your ideas to the group.
Wednesday
All students, meet at the De La Warr Pavilion at 11am to view the Warhol Exhibition. You can get a bus or a train from the station - takes 5 mins by train, 15 by bus. The DLW website is here. There are travel instructions.

The First Mac
It's impossible to explain what it was like to live in a world without a graphical interface - where you saw images and words on a screen - and not just lines of code - or to have a computer that was truly portable. I'd already started art college when this event took place, it's not that long ago - but it does seen like another age, and clearly a world changing event, and nothing was ever going to be the same.

For me - the interesting thing about Alan Turing is that his whole life was about secrets - his work, his ideas, his relationships and even his death - all about clues and codes -I really like the enclosed - images and portraits created from the hidden source code embedded within the HTML that makes a website.

The Monday Lecture series (since 1997) consists of presentations by contemporary artists and cultural practitioners who work across disciplines. This is an opportunity to hear artists, writers, cultural activists talk about the history of their practice and show examples of their work. The lecture series is curated by Mine Kaylan for The School of Arts and Media, as part of the Sallis Benney Theatre public lecture programme.
OCT 10th Ella Gibbs (UK)
Ella Gibbs is an artist and curator based in East London, who has been working in the area recognised as ‘socially engaged’ practice. She has an established reputation for a unique social practice, often working in collaboration with artists, invited guests and the public.
Her extensive professional practice includes a range of national and international projects, exhibitions, workshops and live events that encompass independent curatorial projects and various initiatives within public space. She co-founded ‘Belt, a space in between’, as a live/work laboratory for dialogue and experimental projects.
Her solo commissions include: Common Room Productions, (www.commonroomproductions.org) Campbell Road, Look Ahead Housing and Care in 2007, Spare Time Job Centre at the Chisenhale Gallery in 2003, Programme, Whitechapel Art Gallery in 2002, International Artists Fellowship at Upriver Loft, Kunming, China, 2002. Other Commissioners include Platform for Art and Het Blauwe Huis, Ijburg, Amsderdam.
In 2004 she established Pilot Publishing with co founder Amy Plant. They developed a wide range of community based projects including ‘Laburnum Pilot a street magazine’ commissioned by The Drawing Room, Hackney and ‘Energy Café’ - a horsebox that was transformed into a mobile off grid community kitchen. (www.energycafe.wordpress.com <http://www.energycafe.wordpress.com> ). Energy Café is an ongoing live artwork and was originally commissioned in 2009 by The Art of Common Space, Gunpowder Park.
OCT 17th Bob Levine (UK)
Bob Levene is an artist based in Sheffield. Her work adopts pseudo-scientific strategies and anthropological methods of recording to analyse the 'nature' of things, exploring the scientific and artistic approaches to making sense of the world. The work manifests as recorded sound & video, performance, installation, drawing, photography and sculpture.
Since graduating from an MSc in Electronic Imaging and Duncan of Jordanstone in 2001, Bob has performed and screened work at ICA (London), Arnolfini (Bristol) and BBC Radio 3 Cut & Splice Festival (London), and exhibited at Kiasma (Helsinki), Cornerhouse (Manchester), FA Projects (London).
In 2003, she spent 5 months in Colima, Mexico as part of an Arts Council Fellowship. In 2006, she was awarded an Artsadmin Mid-Career Bursary, and in 2009 she was nomination for the Northern Art Prize. In 2008, she was artist in residence at Yorkshire Sculpture Park where she worked with a surveyor from Ordnance Survey to create a new map of the park.
Between 2004 and 2006 Bob co-founded and directed Hull Art Lab, presenting a programme of interdisciplinary work from over 60 artists in a warehouse in the old fruit market area. She has collaborated with Rob Gawthrop under the name Automated Noise Ensemble making sound based performances and installations for over 10 years.
Bob is currently working on a new commission for The National Media Museum, Bradford, UK

FDA1 - You have Gary Neil for the start of the Ideas Generation module - Thursday and Friday.
All studio sessions are 10am - 5pm. These are all graded projects, marks are taken into account for for final grade at the end of the year.
