Brighton Festival & CINECITY Present POP-UP CINEMA
The Basement, 24 Kensington Street

‘Underground Cinema’ has been used to describe film-makers’ exploration of the political, transgressive and poetic possibilities of the moving image. More recently a grass roots movement of clandestine cinema has been wrestling the movie-going experience back from the multiplex. With Brighton Festival, CINECITY and the Duke of York’s have created an underground cinema – literally – in The Basement, a pop-up picturehouse with a festival programme of previews and special events.

Please note tickets available at Brighton Dome & Festival Box Office in advance or on door.

- I've selected a few highlights - the rest are on the site.

Monday 16 May, 7.45pm
PROFESSOR HEARD’S OLD CURIOSITY SHOW
A magic lantern slide-show-side-show of strange tales and unnatural acts; bearded ladies, alphabetical acrobats, prodigious pigs, baby juggling and curious cinema advertisements.

PROFESSOR H****’s EROTIC MAGIC LANTERN SHOW (18)
A sniggerfest of artistic fluffing material
A prurient look at Victorian erotica, plus further examples of the way in which Victorian gentlemen and ladies got their jollies. Definitely not for children.

Monday 16 May, 10.15pm
SPIKE AND MIKE’S SICK AND TWISTED FESTIVAL OF ANIMATION (18)
For the first time in Brighton the legendary Spike & Mike’s festival of tasteless films dredged from the proverbial gutter.
