If a 'cliche' is phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. Then surely it is an establish metaphor, portraying an idea/emotion/etc. As it is establish metaphor, its a useful tool. Is not the trick to find an imaginative way to use a cliche, to your advantage?
