What's in Font?

The Mail On Sunday has an article about a change of font for the Foreign Office - it claims that the cost was £80,000 - obviously that's a poor reading of the facts - the brief would have been far more extensive than just a change of font. Personally, I preferred it before. The new font already looks dated to me - some institutions should not follow fashion, it devalues them - however, if you read the article it identifies the new font as Frutiger, which is most certainly is NOT.

What they do give us is a sample of the rules that would have come with any brand bible - important guidelines that govern the usage and application of any design rationale - they adopt a fairly mocking tome - and out of context it can seem comic - but this kind of rigid, well thought through structure is what design is all about.
